EBay uses a very unique system in that it provides both the seller and the buyer a way to rate the others performance. This allows other members of the eBay community to gauge how professional their trading partner is likely to be. Feedback is displayed for all members to see and is a key indicator of the reputation of its members. Feedback works as a guarantee for both seller and buyer, its aim is to encourage and promote transactions and ensure that eBay remains a safe place to trade. Feedback is a percentage calculation based on previous comments stretching over a 12 month period. The aim of both the buyer and seller is to maintain a 100% positive feedback rating thereby indicating their trustworthiness. The types of feedback fall into three main categories “Positive”, “Neutral”, and “Negative”. A seller would normally leave feedback after payment has been received, whilst a seller will leave after the item has been delivered. Both a seller and a buyer can leave feedback, however a seller only has the option of leaving “Positive” feedback or to leave feedback at a later date. This was the result of a recent policy change at eBay and was designed to prevent a seller leaving retaliatory feedback. It helps the buyer feel they can give an honest appraisal of a seller without having to suffer a spiteful negative comment. Leaving feedback is not compulsory but it helps ensure that the community has a clear picture of the trading activities between its members and is strongly encouraged by eBay. A “positive” comment is as it indicates and indicates that everything has gone well with the sale. A “neutral” feedback comment means there has been a slight problem either with the item, delivery times, or postage costs. A “negative” feedback comment suggests something more serious has occurred. The comment section for leaving feedback consists of 80 characters in length and provides adequate space for the necessary comment. Once feedback has been left it cannot be modified, by either the seller or the buyer. A seller is allowed to respond to a feedback comment left for him or her, with the buyer then being given the option of replying to this comment. However neither the buyer nor seller can leave an additional positive, neutral or negative rating. Feedback is calculated by the total number of positive and negative comments over a 12 month period, so for example if a seller has 198 positive comments and 1 negative comment, it is necessary to add these two numbers together and divide by the total positive results of 198. So the math is 198 (total positives) divided by 199 (total positives and negatives combined) with the result being 99.5% positive feedback rating. A neutral comment is not included in the above formula. The feedback system is an essential part of the eBay experience and helps promote the concept that reputation is an essential part of the marketplace. With full visibility customers can view a seller’s performance and see how well they trade and how they respond to feedback. It is an evaluation tool to be used before considering to trade.
